Kitsap’s Sound to Olympics (STO) Trail is part of the grand vision called the Great American Rail Trail (GART) that connects WA state to WA DC, but do you know all the history… NKTA participated in the 2018 Rails-to-Trails Conservancy’s (RTC) workshop held in WA state to help RTC decide the final route. Would the route go south of the Olympic Mountains or around the north side to the Pacific Ocean via the STO & the Olympic Discovery Trails (ODT). There was a lot of passion from both sides of the mountain. The conservancy listened, took notes and for many reasons, their chosen route would become the northern route thru Kitsap, Jefferson and Clallam counties.

The Great American Rail Trail is envisioned as a 3700-mile-long non-motorized trail that is about 55% built. After watching this movie, you will learn that Washington State was the least of the Conservancy’s worries. You too can be the judge of their “tough-road-ahead” vision of a non-motorized trail using many abandoned railroads right of ways to cross our country.
